Lou Tomson to lead Thruway Authority

Governor George E. Pataki today nominated Louis R. Tomson as
chairman of the Board of the New York State Thruway Authority. Pending
confirmation by the State Senate to the unpaid post, Mr. Tomson tenure as
chairman runs through January 1, 2005. He succeeds Howard Steinberg, who
stepped down to become a member of the board of the Long Island Power
Authority.
"I'm very pleased to nominate Lou Tomson to lead the Thruway
Authority into the 21st Century," Governor Pataki said. "Lou Tomson
is an experienced and talented leader who has demonstrated a unique ability as
a problem solver. I have every confidence he will bring the same determination
and dedication that he brought to my administration to the Thruway Authority.
"I want to thank Howard Steinberg for his dedicated service
to the people of New York during his three years as chairman of the Thruway
Authority," the Governor said. "With Howard's help and leadership, we have made
significant improvements at the Thruway Authority. I am confident Howard will
play an equally vital role at LIPA. I am pleased he is stayng in public
service."
Mr. Tomson served as Governor Pataki's Deputy Secretary and
then First Deputy Secretary from 1995-98, advising the Governor principally in
the areas of public authorities and commissions.

chairman of the Thruway Authority," Mr. Tomson said. "Having the opportunity to
continue to be of service to New Yorkers is important to me."
Before becoming Deputy Secretary to Governor Pataki, Mr.
Tomson served as representative of the State Comptroller on the New York State
Dormitory Authority board from 1987-91. He began his career in State government
in 1967 as a deputy counsel to the Office of General Services. He left state
service in 1987 after serving four years as counsel to Comptroller Edward V.
Regan. He was general counsel to the Dormitory Authority from 1982-87. From
1979-82, Mr. Tomson served as Deputy Director and Assistant General Counsel for
the New York State Energy Association, which represents New York's seven
investor-owned combination electric and gas utilities.
Mr. Tomson has also held high-level policy, legal and
managerial positions with the former Office of Education Performance Review,
the State Division of Equalization and Assessment, the Department of State and
the State Emergency Fuel Office. He has also served as chairman on a number of
task forces, committees and study groups dealing the mass transportation, equal
employment, the arts and architecture.
Mr. Tomson is a graduate of Columbia College and Columbia
Law School and was admitted to the New York Bar in 1965. He and his wife,
Ingegerd, live in Voorheesville and are the parents of two sons.
