| Press Release: NYS Canal Corporation, April 19, 2000
The 3rd Annual July 2000 Canal
Cruise and Trail Trek for boating and biking enthusiasts will get underway July
7. The 17-day tour of the historic Canal System is scheduled to run from
Whitehall to Buffalo.
"The Canal Cruise and Trail Trek provides
boaters and bicyclists with a unique opportunity to see some of the most
beautiful and historic sites New York State has to offer," said New York State
Canal Corporation Chairman Louis R. Tomson. "Boaters will be able to dock
within walking distance of shops and restaurants, while bicyclists will be able
to explore the beauty and serenity of Canal trails."
"The Canal Cruise and Trail Trek showcases
the great recreational choices and historical sites along the 524-mile Canal
System," added Canal Corporation Executive Director John Platt. "The New York
State Canal System has provided the people of this state with a rich variety of
cultural, historical and economic opportunities over the past 175 years. The
Cruise and Trek is an organized event that encourages people to share in the
heritage that exists in their own backyards."
The participating boaters and bicyclists
will begin their exciting journey by leaving Whitehall on July 7. Participants
will travel south along the Champlain Canal and west along the Erie Canal. The
two-week long event will feature numerous stops at historic villages and cities
along major portions of the Canal System. Scheduled stops include Fort Edward,
Canajoharie, Sylvan Beach, Seneca Falls, Brockport, Lockport, the Tonawandas
and Buffalo. Participants may join at any point along the route for a day or
even an hour or two.
Guided bike tours along the Canalway Trail
System will coincide with the Canal Cruise. In addition to the journey, special
events will take place along the entire tour to welcome cruise and trek
participants and celebrate new projects with local officials, business owners
and residents. Tours of historic sites and other attractions also will be
offered.
