Authority/Canal Corporation Begins Rehab of Route 103 Bridge,
Dam
Press Release: NYS Thruway Authority, March 3, 1999
Work to rehabilitate the New York State Canal
Corporations moveable dam at Lock E-9 on the Mohawk River will
require closing the State Route 103 Bridge connecting Rotterdam Junction
and Glenville.
The Route 103 bridge closure is necessary to perform
major rehabilitation on the combined dam and bridge structure, which is about
85 years old. The dam, with movable gates that are lifted out of the water to
provide free flow in winter, holds back water during the navigation season to
provide a navigation pool for boats entering and exiting the upper end of the
Erie Canals Lock 9.
C.D. Perry & Sons Inc. of Troy will perform the work,
which includes replacement of the roadway deck; major structural steel work to
the bridge; rehabilitation of the concrete piers and abutments; new lower gates
for the dam, and painting of the entire structure.
The project is a partnership with the state Department of
Transportation, which is paying for a portion of the $11.9 million project.
Although the bridge is scheduled to reopen to traffic in
December 2000, completion date for the entire project is
December 2001. The project will not interfere with the New York State
Canal Systems navigation season. This portion of the Erie Canal will be
open as usual from early May through late November, water conditions
permitting.
The Canal System is a subsidiary of the New York State
Thruway Authority.
