| Press Release: NYS CANAL CORP., September 16, 2004
The New York State Canal Corporation today announced that the 2004 New York
State Canal Conference hosted by the Canal Society of New York State, and
co-sponsored by the Canal Corporation, will take place in Glens Falls, New York
from Wednesday, September 22 through Friday, September 24.
When the Erie Canal opened in 1825, it was the greatest engineering marvel
in the world. Today, thanks to Governor Patakis continued support, waterfront
revitalization and Canalway Trail projects continue to provide a tremendous
statewide system presenting numerous recreational opportunities along this
scenic and historical Corridor, said Canal Corporation Executive Director
Michael Fleischer.
Glens Falls, located at the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains and in
close proximity to the Hudson River and Feeder Canal, is host to this years
conference. The conferences overall theme is Marketing the System, and will
focus on marketing Canalside communities and attracting more visitors- both
land-based and water-based, to local and regional attractions and
accommodations.
It is important that outdoor and water enthusiasts become familiar with the
legendary past of our Canals, and realize that improvements made to the Canal
System today create business and tourism opportunities for Canalside communities
for years to come, said Acting Director of Canals Larry Frame. We are pleased
that the City of Glens Falls is hosting this years event and that people have
the opportunity to explore one of the States greatest treasures.
The 2004 New York State Canal Conference is being hosted by the Canal Society
of New York State and co-sponsored by the New York State Canal Corporation and
the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor Commission. A number of the
presentations, exhibits and lectures will take place at the Queensbury Hotel,
the Whitehall Heritage Center, and the Feeder Canal Trail.
The strategy of successfully revitalizing canal communities around our
historic inland waterway requires the collaboration of officials at the federal,
state and local levels as well as the investment of the private sector,
commented Conference Chair David Kinyon, a member of the Board of Directors of
The Canal Society. This conference will bring together all of these parties and
provide them with the framework to continue to shape this cooperative initiative
and to achieve the potential which the Erie Canalway offers.
