| Press Release: NYS Canal Corporation, Friday, June 9,
2000
The New York State Canal Corporation today
announced the launch of an exciting new initiative to expand bicycle tours
along the entire Erie Canalway Trail and to bring in new patrons to local inns
along the way.
Federal, state and local officials joined
together at Adams Canalside Inn just west of Rochester to unveil the new Inn
to Inn Touring Guide, an informative brochure that will make it easier for
Canalway Trail visitors to plan extended trips, secure bicycle support services
and locate the charming inns that reside along the New York State Canal
System.
"This guide represents another important
step in our efforts to expand tourism and business in Western New York and all
along the Erie Canal," said State Senator George D. Maziarz, R-North Tonawanda.
"It is precisely this type public-private cooperation that will help boost
tourism and expand recreational opportunities in communities that border this
historic waterway."
The Canalway Trail system and the new Inn to
Inn Touring Guide are the result of a partnership among the National Park
Service, New York State Canal Corporation, New York Parks and Conservation
Association, and state and local government leaders. The handy new Guide
includes an inventory of inns located along the Canalway Trail, as well as area
bike shops and other useful information.
"I would like to acknowledge the help of
Governor George Pataki, Senator Maziarz, Assemblyman Charles Nesbitt, as well
as the New York Parks and Conservation Association and the National Parks
Service, in making the Canal a first-class tourist destination," said Matthew
P. Behrmann, Director of New York State Canal Operations. "This new guide will
be an invaluable tool for Canalway Trail users who are seeking convenient,
overnight accommodations along the Canal as it celebrates its 175th
Anniversary this year."
Assemblyman Charles Nesbitt, R-Albion, said:
"Initiatives such as this have done much to restore the Erie Canal to its
former glory. We will continue to seek new and innovative ways to promote and
preserve all the great tourist destinations Western New York has to
offer."
