Press Release: NYS Canal Corporation, August 5, 1999
Boaters will soon have a new dock wall to tie up to when
visiting Verona Beach. A new 726-foot wall under construction on the southside
of the Erie Canal will replace an existing wall.
The new dock wall will provide increased services for
boaters that navigate through the Verona Beach area on the Erie Canal,
Platt said. This is a long awaited project that boaters, waterfront
business owners and the town will appreciate.
The Erie Canal through Oneida Lake is one of the most
heavily trafficked areas on the Canal System. More than 7,000 boats travel
through the area during Canal System navigation season, May to November.
Platt added: A refurbished wall is a necessity and
will be a welcoming presence to boaters in this central part of the canal. The
new wall will improve boater access to the communities, benefitting local
businesses that align the Erie Canal.
The $1.8 million construction project will include removal
of an easterly portion and entire top of the existing wall. The front face of
the wall and return walls will be rebuilt. An adjacent walkway surface will be
added. Amenities such as refurbished lighting, dock fenders, reset snubbing
posts, cleats, and ladders will be provided. The project also includes
extensive electrical upgrades, reestablished access/parking areas and
landscaping.
Crane-Hogan Structural Systems Inc of Spencerport was the
low bidder on the project. Harza Engineering Company of Utica will conduct the
construction inspection.
The project is scheduled for completion by December
1999. |
