| Press Release: New York State, August 27, 1999
Governor George E. Pataki today met with Senator Michael Nozzolio and representatives from Seneca and Cayuga counties, where he re-affirmed his strong support for the local residents who are being sued by the federal government in the Cayuga Indian
land claim case. "While I believe the federal government is absolutely wrong in suing its own people, it is my hope that we can reach a reasonable settlement that ensues the federal government pays its fair share," Governor Pataki said. "We remain committed to
working with all sides, including Cayuga and Seneca counties, toward a fair and equitable settlement," the Governor said. "But let me be clear: I will only support a settlement that protects every homeowner and their property rights, and includes a substantial
financial contribution by the federal government. In addition, any settlement must also be supported by the two county governments. "We will continue our efforts to reach a settlement, while also urging our Congressional delegation to press the fight to make the
federal government drop its lawsuit against its own people." Senator Nozzolio said, "Governor Pataki stated very clearly that he is fighting to protect the rights and property of the homeowners impacted by the Cayuga Nation land claim. The State of New York is
standing with the people. Unfortunately, the federal government has decided to support the Indians and the Justice Department is suing to take away the homes of nearly 7,000 homeowners. "It's time for the federal government to take responsibility for its 200 years
of failure to adopt a legal treaty and join the State of New York in protecting the rights of New York State citizens."
