| Press Release: NYS Canal Corporation, August 17, 2000
The New York State Canal Corporation today
announced that a Canalway Trail project in Canajoharie, started in March, is
now complete. The project connects to a popular trail segment between
Canajoharie and Fort Plain, which was built five years ago by the Canal
Corporation.
The $650,000 project was constructed by the
New York State Canal Corporation with funding assistance from the Department of
Transportation, Region 2, and the Federal Transportation Enhancements program.
Additional partners in this project were the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation
and Historic Preservation and the Village of Canajoharie, as did the Central
National Bank, which provided some of the Right of Way needed for the
project.
On Saturday, August 19th at 12:15
p.m. the Village of Canajoharie is having a ribbon-cutting ceremony, in Wagner
Park, to announce the trail segments completion. This event will also
welcome the participants of the Cycle the Erie Canal bike event to Canajoharie.
The Cycle the Erie Canal bike event, which
began in Buffalo on Sunday, August 13, will also be touring through Canajoharie
this Saturday, August 19. The event, organized by the New York Parks and
Conservation Association, will end in Albany on Sunday, August 20.
The New York State Canalway Trail System is
comprised of a network of more than 220 miles of existing multi-use,
recreational trails across upstate New York. Major segments are adjacent to the
waterways of the New York State Canal System or follow remnants of the historic
original canals of the early 1800s that preceded todays working Canal
System.
"When completed, the Canalway Trail system
will provide over 500 miles of multi-use trails for the enjoyment of the
historic Canal System and the beauty that surrounds it," said Thruway
Authority/Canal Corporation Deputy Executive Director John T. Brizzell.
"In the manner of this project, completion
of the trail will involve partnerships between the Canal Corporation and
numerous organizations, including local governments, not-for-profit
organizations, other New York State government agencies and the National Park
Service," Brizzell added.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at
the information booth at the corner of Church and Montgomery Streets in
Canajoharie. Representatives from the
New York State Canal
Corporation, the Village of Canajoharie and local officials will be on hand
to answer any questions. For additional questions, please call the Department
of Public Affairs at the
Thruway Authority
at 518-436-2983.
