How long would it take for me to cruise from Newburgh to Schyulerville this June? I have a 24' deck boat with a 225 on the back. Is there safe parking for my truck and trailer at the Newburgh launch? Any recommendations on an overnight spot on the route? Reply: #1

Stan,
I’m not too familiar with the Newburgh area so I can’t comment on a good place to leave your vehicle & trailer. Hopefully another forum reader will comment. The trip up the Hudson is beautiful, with lots of small towns to visit, and some great scenery. From Newburgh to Troy is 90 – 95 miles. Just before the Troy Lock is the Troy Town Marina which has overnite docking & a nearby Best Western. About 3 miles after the Lock is Waterford on the west side of the river. They have extensive FREE docking and a great visitors center. Unfortunately I don’t know how close the nearest motel would be, but I’m sure a call to the village of Waterford would yield an answer. This is the entrance to the Erie Canal so the visitor’s center has some great historical information, and a tugboat or 2 at the dock. It makes for a great stopover.
From Waterford to Schuylerville is another 30 miles and 4 locks. So in total, your trip is about 125 miles and 5 locks. I usually figure about 15 minutes per lock, and from your description of your boat, it sounds as if you can cruise at about 20 mph. So in all, it sounds like about 8 hours of boating and locking.
A great resource is the Cruising Guide to the Hudson River. It covers the entire Hudson, Champlain Canal, Lake Champlain & beyond. Its available at http://www.lakechamplainpub.com
Best wishes, it sounds like a great trip Reply: #2

Rich,
The Best Western in Troy closed. It is now dorms for RPI. There is a Super 8 (I
think) nearby, that might be pretty seedy. There is also a more high end hotel
just south of the marina, I think right next to the new Dinosaur BBQ. Haven't
been there in a while, but I know Best Western is gone.
